DRIVERS
face a chronic shortage of parking spaces in northern Snowdonia, councillors
heard yesterday.
But
a park and ride scheme was rejected. The findings came in a report to Conwy
County Borough councillors meeting at Bodlondeb.
The
report by RPS planning, transport and environment consultants was studied by
Conwy's transport and economic development policy panels.
The
consultants' conclusions came after a review of the Snowdonia Green Key
Initiative.
The
report found more parking spaces are needed in Betws-y-Coed, Capel Curig and
Beddgelert while spaces in Llanrwst could be better placed.
Researchers
found that northern Snowdonia was not busy enough for a park and ride
scheme.
They
found' 'no existing or potential congestion in the national park".
But
they also believe that tourism is not as successful as it could be.
Researchers
said each town could make more of its strengths in future as half of
visitors will be day visitors staying up to five hours.
They
said: "It is clear that the tourism economy for North Snowdonia is not
reaching its full potential."
Bethesda
has special interest activities, Llanberis has family holidays, Llanrwst has
heritage and culture, Betws-y-Coed has year round shopping, Porthmadog has
its maritime background, Blaenau Ffestiniog has an industrial heritage and
Capel Curig boasts The Great Outdoors.
