Observation 57: Letters –  The Weekly News, Thursday February 21, 2002
Query over spending in Snowdonia

Though largely in agreement with Dr Brian Seddon about the Snowdonia Green Key Strategy (Weekly News, Feb 7), I would query his assumption that walkers and climbers do no spend much money within the national park and the 'gateway' villages.

There are a few outdoor shops in Capel Curig and seven or eight in Betws-y-Coed, and this would hardly be the case if we mountaineers did not spend some money there.

My friends and I also go to the cafes and pubs.

I would estimate we spend several hundred pounds a year rather more than 9p a visit suggested in the strategy document!

I also attended the Llanrwst meeting and by no means was it split 50/50. No more than two people there had anything to say in favour of the plan, and one of those was a councillor.
