Observation 34:  A mountaineer and parent from Lincolnshire

I write to give my personal reaction in connection with the above and I would like to express my concerns for the plan as I understand it. I am happy for this to be forwarded to whom you wish.

I have two main points one as an experienced mountaineer and one as a parent.

  1. I do not need to cover the inconveniences caused by irregular and unreliable bus services, they have been covered by other correspondents.
Usually after a good day out it is quite likely that a group will congregate at a convenient cafe or go looking at gear or souvenir shops and thus support the local economy. But if it takes an hour or so to get back to the car...?
An easy point to dismiss but how busy is Betws-y-coed on a damp day or at the end of the afternoon? How busy is Llanberis? Pete's Eats? If the tales of the unreliable or full buses are to be believed then these retailers will feel the pinch because their customers will still be getting to their cars not to the shops.

  2. My daughters are between 2 and 5. My wife and I love to take them out on bikes, walking and so on. On experience I know that if weather turns quickly, as it can do in Snowdonia, it is important to get the children to a dry, safe place where clothing can be changed, heating can be turned up etc. Not to a bus stop to wait for the next, maybe full, bus. It is possible for children to be severely affected by poor weather in a very short period of time. I would not take my children to where I cannot take proper and appropriate care of them. This policy would prevent us and many other families enjoying beautiful Snowdonia. It would close the area to children. I would take them elsewhere to enjoy the outdoors rather than the alternative of becoming TV/games addicts.
