Chair-bound?
I HAVE recently read the Snowdonia Green Key Transport
Strategy Statement. It is obtainable from the Gwynedd Council Planning and
Economic Development Department, Tel: 01286 679513.
My initial impression is that the anti-car brigade is
hatching plans to bash the motorist again. It seems that some chair-bound
academics of the council are dreaming that there is a car volume problem
in our National Park. I say chair-bound because to those of us in the real
world, there seems only an occasional congestion problem at some honey pot
centres on an August Bank Holiday weekend.
The underlying intention of this scheme may be to
generate economic advantages for those who control, or who have owning
interests in local tourist private businesses.
To those who farm, or work as employees, or live as
retired in the park, there is no real benefit and possibly hidden adverse
effects.
Overall, this scheme appears poorly researched and most
definitely the needs of park visitors (I hate the word tourists) have not
been properly established nor evaluated.
The park and ride aspect of this scheme may be highly
risky and not acceptable to today's car culture.
This green and hare-brained idea of academic could
hasten the decline of North Wales tourism, and before any person hastens
pen to paper to defend this idea, please drive around the park and view
the pretended traffic problem for yourself.
I also wonder what the financial cost of these
unwarranted projects is to our council tax bills?
