New Nantlle Ridge travel scheme launched

A pilot project which will provide transportation at budget prices is now available for people walking along Nantlle Ridge.

With no bus service currently available for those wishing to enjoy the popular walk, the Snowdonia Green Key Initiative has established a pioneering taxi service which will be available to walkers, from the middle of August, 2005.

Following consultation with the local community, the Ramblers Association and Clwb Mynydda Cymru, it was decided that a taxi service would provide a sustainable and effective method of transport.

Instead of having to take two cars to walk the Nantlle Ridge, you can now for example, park one car at Talysarn or Penygroes, call the taxi which will take you to the start of the walk in Rhyd Ddu for the price of a bus fare, Ł1 each, and walk back to your car. Snowdonia Green Key and Bws Gwynedd will subsidise the rest of the fare. This service will only be available between Rhyd-Ddu, Talysarn and Penygroes.

The scheme has been supported by the Snowdonia Green Key Initiative partners, Gwynedd Council, Conwy County Borough Council, Welsh Development Agency, Snowdonia National Park Authority, Wales Tourist Board, and the Countryside Council for Wales. Project Officer, Huw Percy explained:

“We are delighted with the significant support shown to the scheme from the local community, as well as the co-operation of ‘Bws Gwynedd’ who have worked to ensure that the scheme can move forward, and help to provide a more sustainable approach towards transport in the area.”

“Our aim through the pilot scheme is to provide a more environmentally friendly means of transportation for those who are keen to walk the Nantlle Ridge when required.

If successful the Patnership could extend the scheme beyond April 2006 and out to other areas of Gwynedd and Conwy.

The scheme will be available for members of the public between 7am and 7pm, by calling Huw’s Taxis on (01286) 676 767 or 07967 881903.

The Snowdonia Green Key Partnership has met to consider the public response to the consultation draft but no minutes have been made public. The Partnership has released the following statements to the Press:

The Snowdonia National Park Authority:

  • Considered a report by the Planning Manager (Policy) updating Members on the latest position on Wednesday 10th April, 2002. The relevant minute is reproduced here.

  • Considered a report  by the Chief Executive and Planning Manager (Policy) on Wednesday 5th June, 2002. The report, Snowdonia Green Key Initiative (SGKI): The Way Forward, is reproduced here

The SGKP is to arrange a series of focus group meetings in the various communities and with stakeholder groups.

In a letter to the Freedom to Choose - Snowdonia group the SGK Project Officer, Gwenllian M.P. Owens, said:

"We perceive Freedom to Choose - Snowdonia as a key stakeholder group because it represents the views of so many individuals and organisations that visit and/or use Northern Snowdonia.  The comments and feedback received via the group during and after the consultation period have been invaluable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Freedom to Choose for the written response made in relation to the draft strategy statement and to fully acknowledge the amount of work this represented.

A number of very worthwhile and positive ideas have come forward as a result of the consultation which I believe can be developed further if we work closely together. Accordingly I will be in contact soon to arrange the first of what I hope will be a series of regular meetings with the group."
